What our Guests Say
"I am a travel writer for the Times, Sunday Times and Daily Telegraph,
and I want to commend Andrew Bateman and Rebecca Field and their Mountain
Innovations organisation. Andrew has now guided me through three articles
- an ascent of Ben Nevis (see my website:
www.christophersomerville.co.uk
- 'Recent Work'), a snowholing expedition in the Cairngorms and a walk
in Abernethy Forest (both to be published by the Telegraph). Andrew's
calm, expert leadership and Rebecca'a wonderful hospitality at their
Boat of Garten hostel, Fraoch Lodge, really impressed me ... Scotland,
and the new Cairngorms National Park, have a pair of good friends in
Andrew and Rebecca"

Those who came on a guided Walking Holiday said:
Kerry Gordon (Private guiding holiday)
Back to work and missing the hills! Thanks again for a great weekend - you offer a fab service. I have told anyone who wil stand still long enough ... Enjoy.
Joy Turner (Private guiding holiday)
I had a great time and really enjoyed every minute - even the wet ones! Andy is a skilled and sensitive guide. He has a seemingly encyclopaedic knowledge of wildlife and a huge amount of enthusiasm and patience. Andy and Rebecca are generous and gracious and hard working hosts - it was well beyond the call of duty to take us to the Outsiders Festival. They are clearly concerned to ensure that their guests get the most out of their visit And finally - the food was fab. The new extension will make things even better.
Fiona Whitehead (Private guiding group)
lWe had a wonderful few days with you, many thanks for putting up with our loud behaviour and excess wine drinking! The food and your hospitality was splendid, we couldn't have hoped for better. The walking was magnificent and Andy's ability to divine where the dry (and even sunny) spots were definitely lived up to it's billing! Thank you especially for driving us to/from the festival, and sharing the mud & music with us! Apparently the heavans opened on Crowded House when they played in Hyde Park on Saturday evening so they obviously 'brought the weather with them' as the song says (sort of).
Daren Callahan (Glens, Forests & Lochs)
Thanks so very much for your warm hospitality, Andy's expert guidance, and Rebecca's delicious meals. This trip has been more than I imagined - Andy's knowledge of the region, geology, flora, fauna, biology has been an education and Rebecca's cuisine inspiring. You've delighted us with chantarelle dishes of all sorts and I must say that heather bashing is an experience not to be missed! Very best luck with your unique business.
Mick Wansborough (Classic Torridon)
"Thank you very much for another splendid Mountain Innovations Holiday. There were excellent excursions, and we very much appreciated all the trouble you took over Matthew's diet. On the train home, I sat wondering why your holidays are so good. A main factor, of course, is that you offer a complete package - transport to and from airport or railway station, transport on the walking days, accommodation, all meals and packed lunches (with the ability to provide very creatively for special diets), interesting walks showing the best features of the country (and not just guided walks, but lots of information on the geology, landscape, weather, flora and fauna etc). This is very commendable but not sufficient to explain everything. I think that the key factors are that you both work very hard and you are both very good at what you do!"
David Laird, (Winter Munros)
Good walks sensitively achieving balance between the group, the hills
and the weather. I felt able to keep going at the end of the week indicating
a holiday and not an endurance course. Excellent food - had to be, to
entice us off the hills! Tasty variety with plenty of fresh ingredients.
Quality & quantity, Rebecca has set the standards and continues
to exceed them.
The friendly atmosphere and the real fire in the lounge make Fraoch
Lodge a place I'll want to come back to.
Mary Walsh (Winter Munros)
I had a wonderful time - thanks to you both for being so hospitable. This was some of the best Scottish walking I've done (and I've done 5 weeks in the last 2 years in different places), and certainly the best Scottish food by a mile!
Birgitta & Chris Knowles (Glens, Forests & Lochs)
We arrived back in Barmouth on time. It seems very mild here, and a bit tame after Scotland. I would like to say thank you to you again for cooking so well for me. It is the first time I have eaten out since I was diagnosed coeliac. And it was so nice for me that you had taken so much trouble over it, and to be able to relax and feel safe. We loved Scotland and hope to be back sometime.
Ruth Cook (Glens, Forests & Lochs)
Just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you so much for an excellent holiday. It was all I was hoping for and more. Thanks to Andy for the really well thought through and excellently guided walks. Thanks also for the education - I now know what a scaly tooth mushroom looks like and that the Pine Marten is not a bird! Thanks to Rebecca - the food was easily the best holiday food I have ever had. A relaxed and humorous approach and the log fires in the evenings really topped it all off. Thanks again and all the very best for the future - you really do make a great team!
Margaret Forrester (Complete Cairngorms)
"I've been telling everyone here how much I enjoyed my stay with you and have been recommending Fraoch Lodge to all my fellow walkers (and even non-walkers!)"
Mick Wansborough (Complete Cairngorms)
"Thank you for some most enjoyable excursions and the superb meals. I was very pleased with myself that I managed to totter up most of the hills. Unbelievable!"
Chris McGolpin & Catherine Taylor (Complete Cairngorms)
"We had a good time at your place in Scotland - the scenery, space etc. was really rather inspiring. Scotland is for sure a place where Catherine and I will return."
"Many thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable mountain experience - Chris has taken 2 days off work to recover, but I'm back at the grindstone."
Sara Huggard (The Big Three)
"I just wanted to thank you again for making my holiday so memorable. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the walks, the mountains, the views, the birds and I have some great photographs to remind me of my holiday in Scotland."
Wynford Arthur (Spring Munros)
"Chris and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the journeys into the hills."
Steve Thompson (Cairngorm 4000ers)

Paul Buckworth (Classic Winter Cairngorms)
"Thanks once again to all for making it such a great experience."
Steve Carroll (Classic Winter Cairngorms)
"Great: company/walking/food/fun. Thanks to Rebecca for all the cheese in the sandwiches. Thanks to Andy for showing us some wonderful routes."
Mike Tinsley (Classic Winter Cairngorms)
"A wonderful 5 days in the hills & enjoying Rebecca's fantastic food. As usual, great company, great days out, a bloody good laugh and a big learning experience. Have now added banana fruit loaf to the malt loaf club repertoire - but it was a lot better with six energy bars (Andy take note!!!). Wish I could stay longer, but I'm sure I'll be back!"
Alison Mosey (Classic Winter Cairngorms)
"New skills learnt, stunning vistas taken in, a very satisfied stomach and a new worn in pair of boots. Thanks Andy & Rebecca for a good week."
John Hansford (Tailor-made reunion week, Trail group)
"A magnificent holiday. The perfect mixture of relaxation and
hard work on the hills, capped off by the best food one will taste.
Andy's leadership captures all of the F's; fun, friendly, firm and far
too good to miss!
P.S. - We never had the time to visit the compost heap ... shame!"
Jonathan Collins (Tailor-made reunion week, Trail group)
"6 days of walking - thanks so much Andy & to Rebecca for her ministrations in the dining room. For March the weather was so summery it could have been June. Serves me right for bringing a snow shovel! Wishing you both the best for success in your venture here, you deserve it."
Julie Hinde (Autumn Munros)
"Superb walking & fantastic food. Thanks for a great first week in Scotland."
Elizabeth McDonald (Autumn Munros)
"Many thanks for an excellent week. The weather has been (quite) kind and another 7 Munros 'bagged'. A friendly & comfortable place to stay. Special thanks to Rebecca for excellent evening meals and fantastic lunches. Well done."
Doug Hawkins & Cameron Aubrey (Australia) - Tailor-made walking weekend

time."
"Awesome food and a fantastic hiking experience."
Elisabeth Persoud & Isabvelle Baumont (France) - Highland Extravaganza
"Super temps = soleil, chaud, gris, orage, humide toute la anoplie ecossaise sauf la neige. Je n'ai pas tres bien compris la difference entre creag, corbett, Munro mais hors d'Ecosse, cette nomenclature n'a plus d'utilite, donc!! Les chanterelles poussent a foison personne ou fresque ne les cueillent, pays magique!!"
Udo & Gabby, German radio (Highland Extravaganza)
"Thank you very much for these marvelous days, walking in such impressive landscape picking mushrooms and eating them with homemade wild garlic pasta. We never had such great walking days. Es war einfach fantastisch."
Carol, Michelle & Sue (Ben Nevis weekend)
"Thank you for a wonderful weekend. Rebecca, the food was amazing, best veggie grub ever tasted! Andy, thanks for getting us to achieve our goal this weekend, but never again will we walk Ben Nevis. Look forward to returning for easy strolls."
Sally Woodbridge (Tailor-made climbing holiday)
"Brilliant weekend, first go at climbing in the Scottish Hills in winter - so knackered I can hardly write this. Thanks to Andy & Rebecca for organising the guide & thanks for the wonderful food and company. Can't wait till I come back in the summer. See you soon!"
Steve Carroll (Winter Cairngorm 4000ers)
"Great days in the mountains - totally knackered each evening. Revived by good food (great soups). Looking forward to the next time."
Alan Hewitt (Winter Cairngorm 4000ers)
"I wanted excellent mountain days knowing I was safe with a skillful guide and comfortable accommodation. I got 4 outstanding days with an excellent and friendly guide (Andy) and also a wonderful friendly atmosphere in the hostel with excellent food, thank you Rebecca. I'm sure I'll be back, wouldn't go anywhere else in the area. Thank you Andy for the views in the mountains I shall always remember."

Those who came on a course said:
Penny Smith - Mountain Skills and Navigation
"I want to thank you for a fantastic week. I felt so at home, it was just like staying with friends - right down to pouring tea all over your pouffe! The food was spot on - enough for the most energetic of hill walkers but not too rich for us ladies who need to watch our weight! I don't think you should change a thing. Andy - you have the patience of a saint! Harjit and I both felt you'd given us the tools to get going and we might even get better with a lot of practice."
Kathryn Jackson (Lake District) - Hogmanay Winter Skills
"Many thanks for a most enjoyable week. I've come away with increased confidence to tackle winter conditions sols and greatly appreciated the personal touches and atmosphere of Fraoch Lodge that made the experience something bigger course providers couldn't hope to match. Keep up the good work."

Those who stayed said;
Mark and Robbie Lowe, Maidenhead
I would like to thank you both very much for having Rupert, myself and my son, Robbie to stay at your house over the weekend. We really enjoyed your kind hospitality and the excellent evening meals and breakfasts (especially the porridge!). It was my son's first trip into the Scottish highland, and also the first trip out in winter. He really enjoyed the whole experience, and now wants to come back again next year! I have already passed on your accommodation details to some other climbing friends, and if anyone I know is looking for somewhere to stay in Aviemore, I will be glad to recommend Fraooch Lodge. Hope the weather and snow conditions get better for you throughout the remainder of the winter season - and we hope to come and stay again next year.
Anja, Uwe & Nils (aged 4), Germany
"We had a great time here at your place. We enjoyed your hospitality, Rebecca's delicious dinners. Nils especially liked the fire Andy made in the evenings. "Had an excellent time, loved every minute. Will be back. Thanks....Thanks for the hot lovage. Great time will return."
Simon Markland, Trail Competition winner
"Thank you again for a very enjoyable holiday. After at first
being worried that we would be sleeping in a dormitory full of bunks
with a crowd of smelly mountaineers, we found that it was more like
visiting a friends house for a few days. The walks you recommended were
just about right for our ability (i.e.. Not too difficult) and we both
enjoyed them very much. Its true what you said about the midges. We
didn't get bitten once while there but were "got" when we
stopped for a break and some lunch at Loch Lomond.
Hopefully we will have the opportunity to come back to Boat of Garten
in the future, we will not, however, be signing on for sleeping in a
hole in the snow, on the top of a mountain - You must be doing something
right if people really pay YOU to do that!!"
Janet Markland, Trail Competition winner
"Prizewinning accommodation and hospitality. Thank you very much."
Outdoor Walking Group, BCUC
"Great Place - well looked after - super home made food."
Tony Tarlecki and Mark Winfield

Aris Hui, Hong Kong
"A peaceful & lovely place to stay. I appreciate much the kindness & care from Andy & Rebecca, actually they introduce lots of food things onto my trip, and leave a beautiful mind to me."
Manlee Chan, Hong Kong & Amersham
"I had a great time staying here. Rebecca's homemade food & cakes are impressive! I also enjoyed Andy's guided walk in the woodlands. Got to see some of the Highland wildlife. Thank you so much for arranging everything during my stay and also thank you for arranging the rest of the tour in Scotland."
Martin Lane, editor of TNT, came on a Mountain Innovations activity-tour
"One thing I was right to assume was that Scotland would be beautiful.
... to truly appreciate the area's outstanding natural beauty, you need
to get off the road and into the wilderness. It means hiking and biking
your way into the mountains and it can be hard work. But the reward
comes when you reach the plateau and look down into the massive glacial
trough below and realise you've never breathed air as clean as this.
This is what we'd come to Scotland for. Snow-capped peaks all around, lochs and pine forests below and the rare Ptarmigan, a species of grouse unique to these altitudes"
Danny Stephens and Renee Schweiker on their Highland Experience (Australia)
"An exhilarating and breathtaking time. Thank you for the wonderful meals, cosy cottage and a hint of the Scottish Highlands"
Suzanne McNabb & Mark Hickson (NZ)
"Fantastic walking - "It's just over the next hill" - great people, local knowledge, animal spotters (including the pygmy shrew!) THANKS! P.S. And the food!"
Andrew and Lynne Munro (NZ)
"Lovely hills. Love to come back for a week in the snow. Thanks heaps."
Chris Schiller (Australia) on his East Highland Experience and West Highland Tour
"Firstly we all thank you for the hospitality, attention, hearty
food, fun and knowledge you gave us while we were there. We will be
passing your details to a few friends that are into hiking and outdoorsie'
kinds of things."
The weather gave us a bit of grief but saw stunning sights around Isle
of Skye, Glen Garry, Glen Nevis etc, in brilliant sunlight. Though on
the other extreme, Saw nothing but white snow between Glen Coe and us,
nasty (and bloody painful) hail at Loch of Ewe (??) and Pitlochry...
over all had an amazing time. I'm sure you have a vague idea that we
chewed through a great number of photo films!!!"
Janelle Keyser and Ian Pollock (Australia) on their West Highlands extension
"Thanks, we enjoyed the rest of our visit to Scotland. We completed the first walk you suggested on the day we left you, excellent spot, must be so beautiful on a clear still morning."

David and I are hoping to get up to do the advanced winter skills course
