Grade 4
30th April 2011 - 2nd May 2011 ( £ to be confirmed )
There are nine 4000ft peaks in Britain. 5 of these mighty mountains are in the ‘Gorms: Cairngorm (day1), Ben MacDui (day 2), Carn Toul, Braeriach and Sgor an Lochain Uaine (day 3).
This colossal mountainscape holds one of the finest collections of landforms on the planet. They are carved and divided by an array of huge amphitheatres, troughs and breaches. Our routes follow the brink of these impressive features to give you the best plateau walking anywhere.
Arrive: day before walking commences - try to aim for between 5 & 7pm if possible to allow yourself time to settle in before dinner.
Day 1: The much overlooked north ridge of Cairngorm is our chosen route. High above Strathnethy we make a steady ascent to the high plateau and then on up to the summit dome. From here the views go on forever - all the weekends peaks are laid out before you.
Day 2: Ben Macdui is the highest in the range. A route of contrasts: on one side the famous Lairig Ghru slicing the range in two, on the other the huge cliffs of the Shelter Stone Crag and the view down the length of Loch A'an, and in the middle, the gently undulating plateau from which to enjoy it all.
Day 3: This is the big day. After going in 'over the top' we find ourselves directly below the days peaks with relative ease. From this fantastic & remote setting of we climb steeply to regain the plateau and the summit of Carn Toul. From here it's a classic: on our right a continuous series of cliffs and precipitous slopes; on our left a great expanse of high plateau wilderness. We follow the coire rim around, picking of 'Angel's Peak' and passing high above the UK's most permanent snowbed before rising to the final summit of Braeriach. A Fantastic route.
